The Challenge
After the many disruptions and operational challenges of 2020/1 Burnley Leisure were acutely aware of the need for their leaders to be more in line with their business values and work closely with their teams to establish their culture.
The Solution
Excelsior were asked to support by expanding their existing two day intelligent leadership workshop into a two month developmental course. Working closely with Wes Kellow from the Burnley Leisure leadership team, a nine-week developmental programme was specifically designed.
Over this time Burnley Leisure leaders attended two one-day workshops and were remotely supported, in-between, in completing a personal, role specific case study plus circa 6 hours of on-line learning/ assessments.
The Result
The feedback received from the team showed a significant increase in fundamental leadership skills. This included an increase in confidence to make decisions, to help develop their own people (including empowerment) and to communicate more effectively.
The workshops also generated a better understanding between departments and enhanced communication which led to improved working relationships between peers.
‘We always enjoy working with the Excelsior team, their love of the industry and passion to help others comes through in all that they do.
At the start of this programme, it was clear that we had a huge wealth of experience in the leadership team, combined with various perspectives, which is why we wanted to bring everyone together and share their knowledge, sight and skills.
The work completed by the Excelsior team enabled our people to develop their confidence. From the team’s feedback, it is clear there has been a significant increase in fundamental leadership skills. This includes an increase in confidence to make decisions, to help develop their own people (including empowerment) and to communicate more effectively.
The workshops also generated a better understanding between departments and enhanced communication which led to improved working relationships between peers, and competence in their own roles. By engaging in face-to-face sessions and analysing themselves, the learners were then able to cement their understanding of leadership and emotional intelligence with on-line learning.’
